Mount Hood - July 2000 (Dan)
Oregon & Washington Cascades, North Cascades and Columbia River Gorge
The Oregon and Washington Cascades are tree-covered, rather low elevation
mountains punctuated by huge snowcapped volcanoes such as the Three Sisters, Mt. Hood,
Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainer and so on. The North Cascades, against the Canadian
border are of a different character. Young, steep, rugged and challenging. There
are endless virgin old-growth forests, glaciers and peaks with names like Mt. Terror.
The nature of these mountains is more like the Rockies. It rains, A LOT, in the
Cascades although the east side is much drier.
