This obviously not a backpacking trip nor a hike but I wanted to add it to this site.
Bodie is a California State Park. Gold was discovered here in 1859 but the big load was discovered in 1875 after a mine collapse and the town grew quickly to over 7000. Mining continued until 1942 so the site reflects a range of decades. The don't restore anything but try to hold things in a state of arrested decay. There are buildings from the 1870s up until the 1920s. The school was still in use in 1942. This is high desert across the valley from the Sierras. If you enjoy ghost towns this is one of the best. It's not commercialized though there is a small gift shop/museum.
