Sierras September 2022 - Two different areas - Ruby Lake and then Kearsarge Pass
Dan and I drove down to Mosquito Flat with warnings of high winds for a couple of days. We backpacked to Ruby Lake (~11,000') to camp. Sure enough, the winds came up that night and battered us all night. We awoke to a windy, clear, morning. We planned to go over Mono Pass but ran into a couple of guys who said that the forecast was for temps from 10-20 degrees (F) and high winds again. We'd been on this particular hike before so we went back down. There are only a few Ruby Lake pics here.
We drove south to Independence and backpacked up to Gilbert Lake (10,500') and camped at its west end. No one around other than folks passing by on the trail which was 70 or so yards up the hill. The next day we day hiked up to Kearsarge Pass (11,760'). This is a hike that's a favorite of ours and of many others. Beautiful trip! The weather was fine with light wind, mornings in the 20s, and afternoons in the 60s. We did have a bear around camp but Dan ran it off. There are three simple videos below the slide show.
Anyway, it was a bit of a disjointed trip but still a nice one. We also went over to the Bristlecone Pine National Monument for a hike and a camp and then visited the Bodie ghost town as we headed back to Oregon.
